This is a very important step that is over looked, in the maintenance of plants. Cleaning your equipment is very important. Plant disease can spread very easily from plant to plant. Use a 10% Bleach to 90% water solution to sanitize your pruning equipment. If you have a plant that is diseased, make sure you sanitize your equipment before you begin pruning a healthy plant, or treat the disease before pruning.
There are different disease types in plants: internal, foliar, and root. Disease can be from fungal, bacteria, and virus. Fungal is the most common disease, and is very treatable with different types of fungicide. If it is an internal disease if must be treated with a systemic fungicide. The plant will translocate the product internally to the root system, the vascular system, and foliar. If the disease is a foliar it can be treated with a contact fungicide, which will only cures foliar disease. Most organic products will only treat foliar diseases.
Bacteria disease is a less common problem, but can occur. Bacteria disease is difficult to identify and needs to be treated with a bactericide product. Viruses are very uncommon but do occur, and is untreated able.
Again, to avoid the spread of disease just clean your clean your equipment, and treat disease before they get out of control. Identify the disease, and treat with the correct product.

Use Metal Halide bulbs for vegetative growth, and switch to High Pressure Sodium Bulbs for increase budding, flowering, and fruiting.
Make sure the ballast wattage and the bulb wattage are the same. Also use the correct ballast with the bulb type you are using. You can also purchase ballast that is convertible, so you can switch from vegetative halide bulb to flowering sodium bulb.
If you want to conserve energy use fluorescent bulbs that have the perfect light spectrum for cloning and vegetative growth. They also run cooler, than the metal halide and sodium blubs. The florescent light spectrum is not adequate for budding, flowering, and fruiting.
Pick the right wattage to cover the area for the plants that you are growing. Also, put height into consideration when picking the correct wattage. Example: 1000 watt bulb optimal light will cover 4’ x 4’ and should be placed 18” to 24” above plants canopy. A 400 watt bulb optimal light will cover 2.5’x 2.5’, and can be placed 10” to 18” above plant canopy.
Do your homework before you make decision on grow lights, and put into consideration if you wish to expand in the future?

Purified water grows healthier plants. Purify tap water with an Osmosis filter, which removes harmful minerals, chlorine, & stabilizes ph. Using an osmosis filter in hydroponics system is ideal for healthy, lush, and high yield plants. If you are using beneficial biology in your system, you must remove the chlorine. Chlorine will kill you beneficial biology. A large filter for your home will also benefit your landscape plants & turf. Also, with the harmful mineral removed your pH level will stay buffered, and not swing base or acidic. Remember hydroponics systems need a pH at 5.5-6, and soil gardens at 6.5-7.

This month our clients are receiving beneficial applications for their lawn, trees, and shrubs, to promote soil microbial activity in the soil profile. The application consists of sea kelp, fish emulsion, molasses, humic acid, and important micro-nutrients. This application increases microbial activity in the soil to increase decomposition of organic material, to convert to plant available nutrients for rapid root uptake. A healthier plant is more resistant to stress, and insect and disease damage. We also use yucca as a natural wetting agent to increase soil permeability of water. If you are interested in the important application to promote a healthy sustainable landscape, contact us today for your free consultation and estimate. 925-524-0961
