Use Metal Halide bulbs for vegetative growth, and switch to High Pressure Sodium Bulbs for increase budding, flowering, and fruiting.
Make sure the ballast wattage and the bulb wattage are the same. Also use the correct ballast with the bulb type you are using. You can also purchase ballast that is convertible, so you can switch from vegetative halide bulb to flowering sodium bulb.
If you want to conserve energy use fluorescent bulbs that have the perfect light spectrum for cloning and vegetative growth. They also run cooler, than the metal halide and sodium blubs. The florescent light spectrum is not adequate for budding, flowering, and fruiting.
Pick the right wattage to cover the area for the plants that you are growing. Also, put height into consideration when picking the correct wattage. Example: 1000 watt bulb optimal light will cover 4’ x 4’ and should be placed 18” to 24” above plants canopy. A 400 watt bulb optimal light will cover 2.5’x 2.5’, and can be placed 10” to 18” above plant canopy.
Do your homework before you make decision on grow lights, and put into consideration if you wish to expand in the future?
